a weekend in hell

I cannot begin to imagine what it has been like for all those towns that have been so badly affected by the bushfires down here. It truly has been the weekend in hell. We were close but not so close that we had to do anything about it. However stories emerge that others were of the same belief then 5 mins later the fire was upon them. It's so scarey how fast things can happen. Saturday night we had a drive around the block just to check out that we were ok. There were roadblocks not far away and lots of activity from SES and police. Somehow the fact that we were ok doesn't seem to make it any better. A very sad weekend.

Sad indeed. The horror of it is hard to comprehend. Are you having any trouble with smoke?

I was almost in tears on the way to work as they described the destruction and loss, especially the car accidents people had trying to escape the fire. So sad.

I did the neighbourhood tour on Saturday too - that's when I discovered the big grass fire nearby. Yikes!

Like you, we were fairly confident that we were safe, but you just never know. I can still see the fires burning on the southern slopes of the Kinglake national park. Too, too sad.... I know all those tiny little towns well and now they're just gone.

I've been thinking of you as the fires moved in your direction. Stay safe, Linda - just keep your eyes open.

deb- there hasn't been any smoke directly around us but not too far away at times
kristy- it goes beyond belief what has happened. It just seems amazing that in this day and time there wasn't better communication or defence. I don't think we've come all that far since 1939 fires
gysy- glad you're ok too
kerryn-both of us are close to different fires that have turned into one. The danger is still there. keep safe too
